THE MARCO POLO AWARD

There’s huge pressure on the navigator’s shoulders.  Whilst the choice of direction is obvious from the comforts of home, it’s a very different story on the ground as you deal with sleep deprivation, hunger, exhaustion, darkness and thick bushland armed with a compass and crinkly topo map.

.…and then you get lost….. really lost.  For some, an excuse for a good laugh and a unique sightseeing experience, but for others it may cost a heartbreaking podium finish.  Emotions can run high and the serene sounds of birds and waterfalls are replaced with the less peaceful sounds of #$%@#%##.

But not to let the experience go to waste, for our enjoyment learning experience, we will be voting on the worst most memorable checkpoint of the season…. And with that comes the honour of the famous Marco Polo Award.

MARCO POLO CANDIDATES Remember hindsight is a wonderful thing

  • Race: 2017 Winner is from Hells Bells
  • Team: Ona Tiger Adventure
  • Checkpoint: 20
  • Highway to Hell. YES the highway is out of bounds.... NO we don't think they believed it would lead to CP 20.... YES we think they were over it by the time they hit the highway.... Painful to watch them get so close to CP 20 by midnight, before skipping to CP 23 out of frustration.

This is a 3.5hr time lapse reduced to 25 Sec.

  • Race: Hells Bells
  • Team: Guido and Julio
  • Checkpoint: 15
  • Ahhhh there it is...: Night hit and what should have been a quick 10min bike ride turned into a very frustrating hour chasing CP 15.  Patience got there in the end for Guido and Julio

This is a 1 hour time lapse reduced to 30 sec.

  • Race: Hells Bells
  • Team: Peak Adventure
  • Checkpoint: 33
  • Heartbreak in the bull pen. With a 40min lead and 2 checkpoints to go, a heartbreaking nav error led Peak Adventure into a bull paddock and multiple dead ends ..The 40min lead was eroded to zero as 2nd place team Thunderbolt reached CP 33 at exactly the same time.  Unfortunately for Peak, Thunderbolt went on to win the sprint finish by only a few minutes.  Tough to watch unfold....

Shows once again even the top teams are not immune to the challenges of navigation.

This is a 45min time lapse reduced to 20 sec.

  • Race: X-Marathon
  • Team: Tiger Adventure Cubs
  • Checkpoint: TA2 to CP12
  • Night nav nightmares.  This checkpoint frustrated half the field as dusk hit, showing just how challenging night nav is.  The 2nd team on the clip nailed it, but it all went south for the others. The 3rd team had a DNF, another turned into Casper the ghost (assuming GPS issues) and the rest just wished CP12 would just @#%$%.

But the most frustrated team of all must be poor Tiger Adventure Cubs who spent 3 long hours over midnight chasing CP12.. So close, so many times…

This is a 3 hour time lapse reduced to 50 sec.

  • Race: Hells Bells
  • Team: MOFO
  • Checkpoint: 17
  • Long way round. Night time confusion turned what should have been a 15min ride to a 90min trip the long way round.

This is a 90 min time lapse reduced to 20 Sec.

  • Race: X-Marathon
  • Team: Tiger Adventure French Connection
  • Checkpoint: 19 to 21
  • Race unravelling. How a team’s race can unfold from being in a strong position, but then slip thanks to mechanical failures, some stomach issues and a wrong turn around midnight.

Holding third position, Tiger Adventure French Connection's race slipped away from this point and they were unable to recover ground on the teams that past them.

This is a 90min time lapse reduced to 10 sec.

  • Race: X-Marathon
  • Team: Peak Adventure
  • Checkpoint: 19
  • Loop de loop. Unfortunately for lead team Peak Adventure, they took the long way round to grab check point 19.  This resulted is giving up the lead to Thunderbolt who went on to win the race.  Again darkness had set in making navigation that extra bit tougher... Shows even the top teams are susceptible to navigation errors.

This is a 90 min time lapse reduced to 15 sec.
